WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY


History

West Visayas State University (WVSU) dates back to 1924 when it became an independent and distinct teacher training institution known as the Iloilo Normal School (INS). However, its birth can be traced back as early as 1902 when it was opened as a tributary normal school with secondary school instruction.
In 1916, it was a secondary school complete with elementary and training departments. It was only, however, in 1924, with the completion of its main building (now Quezon Hall) and the laboratory school building when INS became a distinct educational institution itself. 

The University further established in 1993, the Center for Physical Education, Sports, Culture and Recreation which later became the degree-granting PESCAR Institute and then PESCAR College in 2000. Strict adherence to the trilogy of functions became apparent at the University since 1986, the establishment of the Research and Education Agency Non-Formal, followed by the Extension Agency in 1988. In 1993, the Mass Communication Department became the Mass Communication Institute which was then changed to Higher Education in 2000.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION


Academic History

 The College of Education of the West Visayas State University is as old as the University itself. It started out as a branch of the Philippine Normal School 1902. Originally founded to be a teacher-training institution, it was then named the Iloilo Normal School. Because of the support it got from the provincial government, it operated primarily as a provincial high school and was called the Iloilo Normal Institute. It had three departments: the normal, preparatory and commercial. In 1924, the teacher-training department became independent as the Iloilo Normal School. By virtue of Republic Act 4189, the school became West Visayas State College in 1965. Before and after this transition, departments and colleges were also set up. Finally, it became a University in 1986 through Presidential Decree 2019. In 1995, the Commission on Higher Education has identified the College of Education as one of the Centers of Excellence in Teacher Education in the country and has retained this eminent title up to the present.

The College of Education has never failed to produce excellent performance in the Licensure Examination as reported by the Professional Regulation Commission. The College ranks highly above the national pass percentage and the College has never failed to reach the top ten nationally. The most recent evidence of this is the performance of BEED test takers in 2006, which, taken collectively, ranked first in the entire country, and BSED test takers collectively ranked second.

The College of Education shall maintain its reputation as the “Center of Excellence for Teacher Education” in the country, specifically in the areas of elementary, secondary, special, early childhood, adult and community education. It shall provide leadership in instruction, research, and extension among teacher education institutions in the country.

To produce graduates in tertiary and advanced education who are dynamic, world-class and globally-competitive; possess socially acceptable values, attitudes and skills; and practice the ethics for service and for the profession.
